About these alphabet banner letters handouts

A banner takes 26 letters, but a sheet of paper can only hold one very large one, so these files work differently from a fixed set. Each version shows a single giant letter, and the Title box is the letter. Type the letter you need, print the page, then change the Title box to the next letter and print again. Spell your banner in the order you want it and you will have exactly the letters your word uses and no spares.

Three styles cover the usual jobs. The outline version is hollow, with a heavy line and a fine dotted guide inside, so students can color it, pattern it or glue paper scraps into the shape. The bubble version has a fat rounded body with a pale center and a colored rim, which looks friendly on a primary wall. The block version has a hard offset shadow behind the letter and reads best from across a hallway.

The Title box also accepts numbers and short symbols, such as an ampersand or an exclamation mark, so the same files make a name banner, a countdown or a birthday display. Keep it to one character for the biggest letter. Two characters shrink to fit poorly, and the page is built for one.

Print on cardstock if the banner will hang for weeks. Cut around the letter with a little border, punch two holes, and thread yarn or ribbon through. The color style picker recolors every letter, and the black-and-white style saves ink when you need a full alphabet.

How to use them

  1. Choose a style: outline for coloring, bubble for a soft look, block for distance reading.
  2. Type your first letter in the Title box. One character gives the largest result.
  3. Print the page, change the Title box to the next letter, and print again until the word is spelled.
  4. Cut around each letter, leaving a small border, and punch a hole near each top corner.
  5. Thread yarn or ribbon through the holes in order and hang the banner at student eye level or above the board.

Classroom tips

  • Spell your banner on a scrap of paper first and count letters, so you print only what you need. Repeated letters need repeated prints.
  • Let students color the outline version, then mount each on a square of construction paper. A name banner built by the class belongs to the class.
  • Print the block version on pale colored paper and the outline version on white. The mix keeps a long banner from looking flat.
  • Laminate letters for a banner you will reuse each year, such as the one that spells your class name or the days of the month.

Notes on this page

  • One page per letter: type a letter in the Title box, print, then change it and print again.
  • Cut-out letters work best on cardstock.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get a different letter?

Type it in the Title box before you print. The sheet shows whatever character you enter, so type A, print, then type B, print, and continue until your word or alphabet is complete.

Can I use numbers or punctuation?

Yes. Digits and common marks such as an ampersand, an exclamation mark or a question mark all work. Use one character per page for the largest size, since the layout is built around a single character.

Which style is best for coloring?

Use the outline version. It has a hollow center and a heavy outline, so students can color, pattern or glue paper into the shape. The bubble and block versions already have a tinted body and are meant to be hung as printed.
