About these classroom newsletter handouts

A newsletter keeps families in the loop with very little writing. This template is a single page that you fill in by hand or type before you print. A left column lists what the class is learning in reading, writing, math, and science or social studies, with three lines for each subject, so you can note a skill, a book or a unit.

The right column holds the practical details. A Dates to remember box has seven lines for dates and events, and a Reminders box has four tick-box lines for things like library day or the field trip slip. Across the bottom are a Student spotlight box for a short note about a student's good work and a note from the teacher.

Because the format is the same every week, families learn where to look. The title and subtitle are editable, so you can name it Room 12 News or anything else. Send it on the same day each week and keep it short.

Fill in the week, your name and class in the boxes and print.

How to use them

  1. Type the title, the week and your name.
  2. Print one copy for each family.
  3. Fill in what the class is learning.
  4. Add dates and reminders.
  5. Send it home in the same folder every week.

Classroom tips

  • Send it on the same day every week so families expect it.
  • Ask a student to write the spotlight with you.
  • Photocopy a master with the repeating dates already filled in.
  • Keep a stack in the office for families who missed it.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I send a newsletter?

Weekly or monthly both work. Choose a schedule you can keep up with, and send it at the same time so families know when to look.

Can I type the newsletter?

You can type the title, week, teacher and class before printing. The body sections are meant for handwriting, which keeps the page quick to fill in.

Is it for families in other languages?

Write the key dates in the family's home language if you can, or ask a colleague or interpreter to help with a short translated note. Some teachers translate the dates box only, which is quick, and covers the information families most need.
