About these summer printables handouts

Summer reading programs need paper that families will actually use. This set uses a bright sun and a six-wedge beach ball, and each one prints clearly on a basic home printer. The reading log is the center of the set: 16 rows for date, title, minutes or pages and a parent initial.

Use the reward chart for a library visit goal or a pages-read goal, and the certificate for whoever finishes it. The calendar works for June, July or August, and children can mark their reading days with a sticker. The bookmarks fit in a bag for the pool or the car, and the border page is a frame for a summer journal.

The set has six files with one design: a reading log, a certificate, a blank calendar page, a page of ten bookmarks, a border page with writing lines, and a reward chart with 30 spots. Type your own names and dates into the fill-in boxes before you print. The reading logs, certificates, bookmark sheets and reward charts carry no logo or web address, because they go home with students; the calendar and border page keep a small footer.

How to use them

  1. Pick the file you need from the version picker: reading log, certificate, calendar, bookmarks, border page or reward chart.
  2. Open the fill-in boxes and type the title, names, teacher and dates. What you type is what prints.
  3. Choose a class style. The bright styles are cheerful on screen, and black and white saves ink.
  4. Print on letter paper. Use cardstock for the bookmarks and reward chart so they last.
  5. Cut the bookmarks apart along the dashed lines, and punch the small circle if you want to add yarn.

Classroom tips

  • Send a stack of reading logs, a bookmark page and a library hours list home on the last day of school.
  • Set a goal that suits the age: ten minutes a day for younger children, a chapter book a week for older ones.
  • Use the border page for a vacation postcard, a summer journal entry or a book review on the first day back.

Notes on this page

  • Calendar pages have no printed dates: type the month and year, then write the dates in by hand.

Frequently asked questions

Can parents fill in the reading log?

Yes. The Initials column is there for a parent or caregiver to confirm the reading, and the Name and Dates boxes can be typed in before you print.

How many days does the reading log cover?

It has 16 rows, one for each reading session. Print a second copy if a child will read more often, or use it for a weekly list of books.

Do the student pages carry the site logo?

No. The reading log, certificate, bookmarks and reward chart print with no logo or web address, so they are clean for a student to keep. The calendar and border page keep a small footer.
