About these spanish vocabulary charts handouts
A beginner's Spanish classroom needs a few charts that stay on the wall all year. These ten cover the words students reach for first: the alphabet, numbers, the calendar, colors, shapes, family members, greetings and the things in your room. Each chart shows the Spanish word large, with the English meaning underneath, so a student can look up a word without asking.
The alphabet chart uses the 27 letters recognized by the Real Academia Española since 2010, with the standard letter names and a picture-free example word for each letter. Ch and ll no longer count as separate letters, and the chart says so. The colors and family charts show masculine and feminine forms side by side, because gender is the first thing English speakers must get used to.
Spanish differs from country to country, and the charts take the middle road for US classrooms. Where a common word changes by region, a small note names the other choice, for example la pluma in Mexico or el ordenador in Spain. Use whichever your students and families say at home.
Print a chart for the wall, a smaller copy for each desk folder, or both. The same chart in color and in black and white works for any printer.
How to use them
- Choose the chart that matches your unit.
- Edit the title if you want your own heading.
- Print one copy for the wall and one for each student folder.
- Practice the words aloud before students write them.
- Cover the English side for a quick self-quiz.
Classroom tips
- Say each word with the article (el, la) so students learn gender with the noun.
- Point to the classroom objects chart while you give directions in Spanish.
- Use the numbers 1-100 chart for date, age and price practice.
- Laminate the greetings chart and hang it by the door so students greet you in Spanish as they come in.
Notes on this page
- Spanish varies by region. Choices here are neutral for US classrooms, and small notes on the charts show common alternatives.
- The 27-letter alphabet follows the Real Academia Española (2010). Ch and ll are digraphs, not separate letters.
Where the facts come from
- Real Academia Española y Asociación de Academias de la Lengua Española: Ortografía de la lengua española (2010) for the 27-letter alphabet and letter names; Diccionario de la lengua española for spelling, accents and gender of the words
- Instituto Cervantes: Plan curricular and Diccionario de términos clave for usage, regional variants and verb tables
- SpanishDict: Second source for vocabulary, regional variants and conjugations
- verbecc and num2words (open source Python packages): Conjugation tables and number words were generated by rule and compared programmatically against these packages

Frequently asked questions
Which Spanish do these charts use?
They use neutral Spanish that works in US classrooms. When a word differs by region, a small note on the chart gives the common alternative, such as el celular and el móvil. Teach the version your community uses and mention the other.
How many letters are in the Spanish alphabet?
There are 27: the 26 letters of the English alphabet plus ñ. The Real Academia Española dropped ch and ll as separate letters in 2010, though older dictionaries and books still list them.
Can I print these in black and white?
Yes. Every chart uses light tints and dark text, so it prints clearly on a school printer. The color chart uses swatches, so use a color printer for that one or label the swatches by hand.
