About these graph paper handouts

Graph paper is one of those supplies every math teacher runs out of. These five sheets cover the common choices, drawn so the squares are true to size when the page is printed at 100%. A small title line and a name and date line sit at the top, and the rest of the page is grid.

The 1/4 inch sheet is the all-purpose choice for graphs, area models and place value columns, and every fourth line is slightly heavier so inches are easy to find. The 1/2 inch sheet gives younger students bigger squares for bar graphs and arrays. The 1 centimeter sheet matches metric measurement and is handy for area and perimeter with centimeter units.

The dot grid sheet carries a dot at every quarter inch, with larger dots every inch, which is popular for geometry, notes and sketching because the dots guide the pencil without making the page busy.

The coordinate sheet is a 1/4 inch grid with bold x and y axes through the center and labels every five squares. Use it when students plot points on all four quadrants and you want the grid already set up.

How to use them

  1. Choose the grid size.
  2. Edit the title and add a student name and date.
  3. Set your printer to Actual size or 100% so the squares are the right size.
  4. Print a stack and keep them in a math folder.

Classroom tips

  • Check one square with a ruler after the first print to confirm the scale is right.
  • Use the 1/2 inch paper for arrays and bar graphs with younger students.
  • Have students use one square per unit and write the scale at the top of each graph.
  • Keep dot grid paper for geometry sketches, symmetry and tessellations.

Notes on this page

  • Print at 100% (Actual size) so squares measure 1/4 inch, 1/2 inch or 1 cm.

Frequently asked questions

Will the squares really measure 1/4 inch?

Yes if you print at 100% (Actual size) on letter paper. If your print dialog says 'Fit to page', switch it off so the grid is not scaled.

Which graph paper is best for coordinate graphing?

Use the coordinate sheet when you want the axes already drawn. For a student-made axis, use the 1/4 inch or 1/2 inch sheet and let students draw and label their own.

Is the 1 cm sheet exactly one centimeter?

The squares are drawn at 1 cm (100 ÷ 2.54 units at 100 units per inch). Printed at actual size, they will measure one centimeter. A quick ruler check confirms it.
