About these character map handouts

A character map helps students move from what a character looks like to who the character is. Good readers notice how characters act, what they say, what they want and how they change. A map keeps those observations in one place and ties them to the text.

The character web has six boxes around the character's name: looks like, acts like, says, feels, what others think and how the character changes. It suits grades 2 to 5. The traits chart has five rows with a trait word, what the character does or says as evidence, a page number and what this shows about the character, which is the right level for grades 4 to 8 when students must support claims with evidence. The think, feel, say, do figure has an outline of a person with a box for each, plus space for one describing word and its reason, which helps students see that a character's words and actions may not match their thoughts and feelings.

Use the pages with a novel, a read-aloud or a picture book. Type the character's name in the Subject box to print it on the page.

How to use them

  1. Choose a version based on grade level and how much evidence you want.
  2. Type the character's name in the Subject box and print.
  3. Fill in what is easiest to find first: how the character looks and what the character does.
  4. Add evidence from the text for each trait you claim.
  5. Finish by writing how the character changes from the beginning to the end.

Classroom tips

  • Teach trait words beyond nice and mean, such as stubborn, curious or generous.
  • Require a page number with each piece of evidence in the traits chart.
  • Compare maps from the beginning and the end of the book to show change.
  • Have partners disagree about a trait and defend their view from the text.
