About these advent printables handouts

Advent is the season of preparation before Christmas in Western Christian churches. It begins on the Sunday nearest November 30 and spans four Sundays, and many churches and classrooms mark it with a wreath of four candles, usually three violet and one rose.

This set has six files that share one design language: a four-candle wreath, a star and a single candle. Every file is drawn from shapes and type only, so the set shows symbols and patterns and no people or figures. The reading log has twenty ruled rows with date, title, minutes or pages, and a column for a grown-up's initials. The certificate is a landscape page with a patterned border. The calendar page is a blank six-week grid with day names and empty date boxes, so you write in the dates yourself. The bookmark sheet holds eight cut-apart bookmarks with tassel holes, and the writing page and reward chart round out the set.

The wreath on the reading log and bookmarks is drawn with candles of different tints so students can color the third candle rose if your tradition does. Churches and schools differ in how they keep Advent, so the pages carry no prayers, readings or captions; add your own to the border page or the back.

The reading log, certificate, bookmarks and reward chart carry no logo or web address, so a student or family can keep them. The calendar page and writing page keep a small footer. These pages work for a countdown reading challenge: one row of the log per day, or a weekly stamp on the reward chart.

How to use them

  1. Choose the file you need: reading log, certificate, calendar page, bookmark set, border page or reward chart.
  2. Open the fill-in boxes and type the details that stay the same for the class, such as the school, teacher, month or the heading.
  3. Pick a color style. Black and white saves ink; the colored styles suit card stock.
  4. Print on letter paper at actual size, or save as a PDF. Use card stock for bookmarks and certificates.
  5. Fill in names by hand or on screen, and keep a spare copy of each page for new students.

Classroom tips

  • Use the border page for a weekly Advent reflection or a class letter to families.
  • Light the wreath on the reward chart by coloring one candle on each of the four weeks.
  • Print the bookmarks on card stock, cut on the lines, and punch the small circle at the top for a tassel or ribbon.
  • Keep two blank certificates in a folder so there is always one ready for a quiet moment of recognition.

Notes on this page

  • Advent colors and customs vary by church; follow your school's practice for candle colors.
  • The wreath candles are drawn plain so you can color them to match your tradition.
  • Reviewed copy is welcome: use the Report a correction link if anything on this page should change for your community.

Frequently asked questions

What is Advent?

Advent is the season of preparation before Christmas in Western churches. It begins on the Sunday nearest November 30 and covers four Sundays, and it also opens the Western liturgical year.

Do the Advent pages include dates?

No. Dates for this holiday can shift from one year to the next, so the calendar page is a blank six-week grid with empty date boxes. Add the month in the fill-in box, then write in the dates your community keeps.

Do the pages show people or religious figures?

No. The set uses only symbols, patterns and plain type. It is built from a four-candle wreath, a star and a single candle, which keeps the pages respectful and easy to use with any age group in your school.
