About these biography and research organizer handouts

Biography and research projects ask students to collect facts from sources and then present them in their own words. Without structure, students copy sentences or lose track of where a fact came from. These two organizers give the project a clear shape from the start.

The biography page has spaces for the person's name, birth and death information, early life, what the person is known for, challenges, how they overcame them, three important events, three describing words and why the person matters today. The questions move from facts to interpretation, which suits grades 3 to 6. The research page has a research question, three source records with title, author, date and type, a six-row fact table with the source number and page or link, and a summary box. It teaches students to tie each fact to its source and to write in their own words, which is a habit that carries into middle school and beyond.

Pair the biography page with a timeline for a full unit on a historical figure. Type the person's name or the research topic in the Subject box to print it at the top.

How to use them

  1. Choose the biography page for a person or the research page for a topic.
  2. Type the name or topic in the Subject box and print.
  3. For research, write the question first and keep it in mind while reading.
  4. Record each fact in your own words and note the source number and page.
  5. Use the summary box to answer the question in a few sentences.

Classroom tips

  • Model note-taking in your own words with one paragraph before students start.
  • Require at least two sources on the research page.
  • Ask students to underline the fact they find most surprising.
  • Use the biography page along with a timeline for a more complete picture.
