About these back to school printables handouts

The first weeks of school are mostly routines, and this set gives you six pages that fit them. Start the year with a reading log that goes home on day one, a reward chart for a class goal, and a border page for the first writing sample. Everything is built from simple apples, pencils and stripes, so it looks cheerful without competing with your own bulletin boards.

The calendar page has no dates printed on it. Type the month and year, then write in your own first day, picture day and open house, so one design works for August, September or a start in January. The bookmark page prints ten cut-apart bookmarks with a hole mark at the top for yarn, and each one has a line where a child writes a name.

The set has six files with one design: a reading log, a certificate, a blank calendar page, a page of ten bookmarks, a border page with writing lines, and a reward chart with 30 spots. Type your own names and dates into the fill-in boxes before you print. The reading logs, certificates, bookmark sheets and reward charts carry no logo or web address, because they go home with students; the calendar and border page keep a small footer.

How to use them

  1. Pick the file you need from the version picker: reading log, certificate, calendar, bookmarks, border page or reward chart.
  2. Open the fill-in boxes and type the title, names, teacher and dates. What you type is what prints.
  3. Choose a class style. The bright styles are cheerful on screen, and black and white saves ink.
  4. Print on letter paper. Use cardstock for the bookmarks and reward chart so they last.
  5. Cut the bookmarks apart along the dashed lines, and punch the small circle if you want to add yarn.

Classroom tips

  • Send the reading log home in the first-day folder with a note about how many minutes you expect, then collect it on a Friday so the habit starts early.
  • Print the reward chart on cardstock and stamp the apples, one for each day the whole class lines up quietly or finishes morning work.
  • Use the border page for the first-week writing sample about summer. The frame makes a plain page look finished on a hallway display.

Notes on this page

  • Calendar pages have no printed dates: type the month and year, then write the dates in by hand.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change the title on the certificate?

Yes. Type your own award wording into the title and subtitle boxes before you print, such as Star Helper or Kindness Award. The recipient name, teacher and date boxes work the same way.

Is there a different calendar for each month?

No. The calendar is one blank month grid with the design on it. Type the month and year in the fill-in box and write the dates by hand, which keeps it useful in any year.

Do the student pages carry the site logo?

No. The reading log, certificate, bookmarks and reward chart print with no logo or web address, so they are clean for a student to keep. The calendar and border page keep a small footer.
