About these coordinate plane handouts

A coordinate plane lets students describe a location with two numbers. The first number, x, says how far to move across, and the second, y, says how far to move up or down. Mixing them up is the most common mistake, so the pages say it in plain words.

The one quadrant plane covers 0 to 20 on each axis, which is enough for fifth-grade plotting of points and for line graphs of real data. Four ordered-pair blanks sit below the grid for students to record the points they plot.

The four quadrant plane runs from −10 to 10 and numbers every unit on both axes. It is the right sheet for sixth-grade work with negative numbers, reflections and distance between points.

The labeled reference plane names the axes, the origin and the four quadrants, and shows the sign pattern of each quadrant: (+, +), (−, +), (−, −) and (+, −). Four sample points, A(3, 4), B(−5, 2), C(−6, −3) and D(7, −5), are plotted so students can check how the coordinates match positions.

How to use them

  1. Choose the plane that fits the lesson.
  2. Edit the title and add a student name and date.
  3. Print and have students plot at least three points.
  4. Check that students write ordered pairs in the order (x, y).

Classroom tips

  • Teach 'across the hall, then up the stairs' to remember x before y.
  • Have students plot points that spell a letter or shape and trade with a partner.
  • Use the labeled plane to practice naming the quadrant for a given ordered pair.
  • Reflect a plotted point across each axis and record how the signs change.

Frequently asked questions

Why does x come before y?

It is a convention: x is the horizontal distance and y is the vertical distance, and the pair is written (x, y). A simple memory trick is to go across the hall first, then up the stairs.

Which quadrant is (−4, 6) in?

Negative x means left of the origin, and positive y means above it. That is Quadrant II. The labeled reference sheet shows the signs for all four quadrants.

Which version do I use for graphing data?

Use the one quadrant plane when values are all positive, such as time and distance. Use the four quadrant plane when negative values may appear.
