About these 114 surahs of the qur'an handouts

The Qur'an has 114 surahs, or chapters, arranged in a fixed order from Al-Fatihah, the opening, to An-Nas, the last. This chart lists them all on one landscape page in five columns, each row showing the number, an English spelling of the name and the Arabic title. The Arabic is read from right to left and is shown in a plain print style.

Surah names appear in many English spellings, such as Al-Baqarah and Al-Baqara or Ya-Sin and Yasin, so a name in another book may look different from the one on the chart. The Arabic titles are the reliable guide, and the numbers confirm the order. The chart gives names and numbers only; it does not give meanings, verse counts or the place of revelation, which scholars sometimes treat differently.

Use the chart for a memorization unit, in which students learn the names of the last few surahs first, or as an index for finding a surah quickly. The chart carries a note that the surah names have not been independently checked against a primary source, so a teacher should confirm the names and spellings against the school's mushaf or text. Students can check off the surahs they have learned on a printed copy.

How to use them

  1. Print the chart on card stock if students will use it often.
  2. Read the surah names in order with the class, following the numbers.
  3. Have students find a surah by number and then by name.
  4. Mark the surahs the class has learned.
  5. Check any spelling difference against the school's mushaf.

Classroom tips

  • Begin with the shorter surahs near the end, which are the ones most students learn first.
  • Group the surahs in sets of ten for a weekly review.
  • Have students find their favorite surah's number and Arabic title.
  • Compare two books' spellings of the same name and discuss why they differ.

Notes on this page

  • There are 114 surahs, in the standard order of the Qur'an.
  • English spellings of surah names vary between books; Arabic titles are shown beside them.
  • This chart has not been independently checked against a primary source. It is provided for informational purposes only. Please do your own research to verify it.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the chart say it has not been checked?

The surah names have not been independently checked against a primary source. Spellings in English differ between books, so the note asks teachers to confirm the names against the school's own text.

Why do the English spellings differ from my book?

English spellings of Arabic names vary, so one surah can appear as Al-Baqarah or Al-Baqara. The Arabic title and the number are the best way to match the chart to another book.

Does the chart give verse counts?

No. It gives the number, the name in English and the title in Arabic only. Verse counts and the place of revelation are left out, since scholars count and classify them in more than one way.
