About these classroom signs handouts

Signs earn their wall space when students actually use them. The noise-level chart is a five-step staircase from Silent to Presenter voice, with a short description at each step and sound waves that grow with the level. Point to a step before an activity, and students know the voice level you expect.

The rules poster lists five short rules in large type. They are common ones, and you can retitle the poster, but they work best when the class helps write them. The procedures checklist is a teacher record rather than a wall sign. It lists 16 routines with Taught, Practiced and Reviewed tick boxes you can date as you go.

The daily schedule is a blank poster with ten rows, each with a clock face, a time line and an activity line. Fill it in by hand and keep it on the wall, or ask a student to write it each morning. Print signs on card stock if you plan to laminate them.

Edit the title and subtitle in the fill-in boxes to match your room.

How to use them

  1. Choose the sign you need.
  2. Type a title or subtitle if you want your own wording.
  3. Print on card stock.
  4. Laminate if you can.
  5. Teach the sign on the first day and refer to it often.

Classroom tips

  • Move a clip or an arrow on the noise chart so the level is clear.
  • Write the class rules with students, then post them.
  • Date the procedures checklist when you teach each routine.
  • Redo the daily schedule when your day changes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change the rules?

The rules poster has fixed wording. You can retitle it. For your own rules, print it and ask the class to cross out and write over, or use the schedule page as a blank.

How do I use the noise-level chart?

Point to the level before each activity and say the number out loud. Students then know whether to whisper, talk with a partner or use a presenter voice.

Is the procedures checklist for students?

No, it is a teacher record. It tracks which routines you have taught, practiced and reviewed so nothing gets skipped. It is also a good page to show a mentor or administrator, because it records what you have taught and when.
