About these number line handouts
A number line turns counting into movement. Adding becomes hopping to the right, subtracting becomes hopping to the left, and the distance between two numbers is something students can see. Each page here holds several lines so students can model more than one problem without running out of room.
The 0 to 10 and 0 to 20 pages mark every whole number, and the 0 to 10 page also marks halves with small ticks. The 0 to 100 page labels every ten and marks every one, which is helpful for skip counting and for rounding to the nearest ten.
The negative number page runs from −10 to 10, with zero in bold in the middle. Students use it to see that numbers to the left of zero are less than numbers to the right, and that subtracting a bigger number from a smaller one crosses zero.
The fraction page gives seven lines from 0 to 1, each cut into halves, thirds, fourths, fifths, sixths, eighths or tenths. Stacking the lines shows that 1/2 sits at the same spot as 2/4, 3/6 and 5/10.
How to use them
- Choose the number line that fits your lesson.
- Edit the title and add a student name and date.
- Print, then laminate for use with dry-erase markers.
- Model one hop together, then let students try one on their own line.
Classroom tips
- Draw hops as arcs above the line and label each with the amount added.
- Ask students to place a counter on a number and move it to solve a story problem.
- Use the fraction page to place 3/4 on the fourths line and then find a matching spot on the eighths line.
- On the negatives line, ask which is greater, −3 or −7, and have students show it.

Frequently asked questions
Why are there several lines on one page?
Students can solve a few problems on one sheet, compare different jumps and keep earlier work for reference. Teachers can also cut the lines apart for pairs or center work.
What are the small tick marks on the 0 to 100 line?
Each small tick is one. The longer tick marks and labels fall on tens, so students can count by ones between tens or skip count by tens.
How do I use the negative number line for subtraction?
Start at the first number, then move left by the amount you subtract. For 2 − 5, start at 2 and hop 5 to the left. You land on −3, which shows why the answer is negative.
