About these classroom passes handouts

A good pass does two jobs. It tells the adult in the hallway that a student is where they are supposed to be, and it gives you a quick written record of who left, when and why. These cards are sized six to a page, so one sheet of paper covers a week for most rooms, and each card has a clear place for the student, the time out and the time back.

The hall and bathroom pass has tick boxes for the usual destinations, so a student can mark where they are going without a conversation. The library, nurse and office and guidance passes work the same way with boxes that fit each trip. The nurse pass asks for a reason in the student's own words and does not ask for any medical detail.

The no-homework pass is a classroom reward. A student can hand it in for one assignment of their choice, and you initial it when it is used. Because every one of these cards is something a student carries or keeps, they are printed without any website branding.

Type your name and room number into the fill-in boxes before you print, and every card on the page carries them.

How to use them

  1. Type your name and room number in the fill-in boxes.
  2. Choose the pass you want and pick a style that suits your room.
  3. Print on card stock if you want the passes to last.
  4. Cut on the dashed lines.
  5. Give each trip a card and collect it when the student returns.

Classroom tips

  • Print on bright card stock, one color per destination, so you can tell at a glance which pass is out.
  • Laminate a few and punch a hole in the corner for a lanyard or hook by the door.
  • Keep a clipboard of used passes for a week if you ever need to sort out a hallway question.
  • Hand out a fixed number of no-homework passes per term so they stay special.

Frequently asked questions

Do students have to fill in every line?

No. The student line and the time out are the useful ones. The rest help you keep a record, so fill in as much or as little as your room needs.

Can I use one pass for several destinations?

Yes. The hall and bathroom card has tick boxes for the common stops, and each destination card has an Other box with room to write. If a student needs somewhere else, they tick Other and write it, which you can read at a glance when the card comes back.

Why do these passes have no logo on them?

Passes are things students carry, so we left off our branding. Everything else on the site that is a teacher record keeps a small footer. That keeps the cards clean for students and lets them look like part of your own room.
