About these shapes and formulas handouts

Geometry vocabulary and formulas are easy to lose between lessons, so these charts keep them together. The shapes sheet starts with the polygons from triangle to decagon, each with its number of sides and vertices, then the special quadrilaterals and the common solid shapes.

For each solid with flat faces, the sheet gives the faces, edges and vertices, such as 6, 12 and 8 for a cube. Those counts were checked with Euler's formula, vertices minus edges plus faces equals 2, which holds for every one of the solids shown.

The area and perimeter sheet gives formulas for the square, rectangle, triangle, parallelogram, trapezoid, circle and rhombus, with a small labeled drawing and a worked example for each. The volume sheet covers the cube, rectangular prism, triangular prism, cylinder, cone, square pyramid and sphere, with surface area where the formula is simple.

Every worked example was computed by program and checked against the formula, and the page reminds students that area is measured in square units and volume in cubic units.

How to use them

  1. Choose the chart for your unit.
  2. Edit the title and add a student name and date.
  3. Print for a binder or the wall.
  4. Work through one example on each page before students try their own.

Classroom tips

  • Have students find each solid in the classroom, such as a box or can.
  • Ask students to explain why the triangle formula has one half.
  • Pair the formulas with grid paper so students can count squares to check area.
  • Have students write the unit next to every answer.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between perimeter and area?

Perimeter is the distance around a shape and is measured in units like inches. Area is the space inside and is measured in square units. A 9 by 4 rectangle has perimeter 26 and area 36.

Why use 3.14 or π?

The circle formulas use π, about 3.14159. Many classrooms use 3.14 for estimates. The examples are rounded to two decimal places from the full value.

Is a cylinder a polyhedron?

No. A polyhedron has only flat faces. A cylinder, cone and sphere have curved surfaces, so the sheet lists their faces and surfaces in words instead of counting edges and vertices.
