About these ten frames handouts

A ten frame is a two-by-five grid that helps young students see numbers as groups instead of counting one by one. Because the frame always holds ten, students can tell at a glance that 7 is five and two more and that three more spaces would make ten.

The single frame page gives you one large frame for counters, with number sentences below for make-ten facts. The addition sentence and the matching subtraction sentence are both printed, so students see that 6 + 4 = 10 and 10 − 4 = 6 describe the same pair.

The double frame page holds four sets of two frames. Students fill the first frame to 10, then continue in the second to build teen numbers and write the matching addition sentence. This supports the standard of seeing 10 + n as a teen number.

The blank set contains twelve frames on one sheet. Use them for dot stamps, stickers, counters or crayons, and for teacher-made number talks. Cut them apart for sorting games or glue them in a math journal.

How to use them

  1. Choose single, double or blank.
  2. Add a title, student name and date if you like.
  3. Print on letter paper, or cardstock for counters.
  4. Show a number, ask how many more make ten, and have students fill the frame and write the sentence.

Classroom tips

  • Always fill the top row left to right first so students learn the standard pattern.
  • Use two colors of counters to show a fact like 4 + 6 = 10.
  • Hold up a filled frame for three seconds and ask how many without counting.
  • Have partners take turns: one makes a number, the other says how many more make ten.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the frame have two rows of five?

Two rows of five link to the fingers on two hands and to the 5 + 5 structure of ten. Students can see a full row as five and use it to find other numbers quickly.

What is the difference between single and double frames?

A single frame holds up to ten and teaches make-ten facts. Double frames hold up to twenty, so students can build teen numbers as ten and some more.

What counters should I use?

Any small flat objects work: beans, buttons, bingo chips or dot stickers. Use two colors when you want to show how a number splits into two parts.
