About these vocabulary and word map handouts

Students learn new words best when they meet them more than once and use them in different ways. These three organizers go beyond definition copying. Each one asks students to think about a word's meaning, group and parts and then use the word.

The word map asks four questions: What is it? What is it like? What are some examples? A sentence and a picture complete the page. This gives students a way to talk about a word, so it helps English learners. The vocabulary log is a landscape table with seven rows for word, part of speech, meaning, sentence and sketch, and a Unit box prints the topic at the top. It is useful as a running record across a unit. The word parts map breaks a word into prefix, root and suffix, with a space for what each part means, then asks for the whole word's meaning and other words that share the parts.

Use the word map for key terms in science and social studies, the log for weekly vocabulary lists and the word parts map for upper-elementary and middle school. Type the word in the Subject box before printing.

How to use them

  1. Choose the organizer that matches the task: a single word, a list, or word parts.
  2. Type the word or unit name into the form and print.
  3. Students write what they know, using their own words.
  4. Add a sentence and a picture that show meaning.
  5. Review the page in a few days to check retention.

Classroom tips

  • Require students to write a sentence that shows they understand the word, not one that could fit any word.
  • For word parts, begin with common roots such as port or struct.
  • Collect pages in a binder to make a personal dictionary.
  • Pair English learners with a partner to say the word aloud before writing.

Frequently asked questions

What is a word map?

A word map is an organizer that explores a word by asking what it is, what it is like and what some examples are. It often includes a sentence and a picture.

How is this different from the Frayer model?

The Frayer model sorts a concept by definition, characteristics, examples and non-examples. The word map asks category, features and examples and adds a sentence and a picture.

Which grades is the word parts map for?

It fits grades 3 to 8, once students know that words can have prefixes, roots and suffixes with their own meanings.
