About these torah and tanakh handouts

The Torah is the first part of the Hebrew Bible and has five books: Bereshit, Shemot, Vayikra, Bamidbar and Devarim, known in English as Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. The first chart shows each Hebrew name, its English name and the number of chapters. The Hebrew names come from key words in the opening of each book.

The second chart shows the whole Tanakh, a word built from the first letters of Torah, Nevi'im and Ketuvim. The Torah has five books, the Nevi'im (Prophets) eight and the Ketuvim (Writings) eleven, for a total of twenty-four. Samuel, Kings, Chronicles and Ezra-Nehemiah are each counted as one book, and the twelve shorter prophets are counted as one book, The Twelve. Some count the books differently, with a total of twenty-two, by joining Ruth to Judges and Lamentations to Jeremiah.

The order of the Ketuvim is not fixed in Jewish tradition, so the chart follows the order in most printed editions. Hebrew is set in a plain print typeface and reads from right to left. Use the Torah chart as a classroom poster and the Tanakh chart as a reference for older students. The Christian Old Testament arranges the same writings in a different order, which is one reason the Hebrew names and divisions matter.

How to use them

  1. Print the Torah chart as a poster and the Tanakh chart for each student's folder.
  2. Read the five Torah names aloud, then the English names.
  3. Have students find the Hebrew name on the chart and match it to the English name.
  4. Introduce the Nevi'im and Ketuvim after the Torah is secure.
  5. Ask students which books are counted together and why.

Classroom tips

  • Learn the Hebrew names first and the English names second, since many Hebrew names are short and easy to chant.
  • Match cards of Hebrew names to English names make a quick center game.
  • Ask students to find the opening word of each Torah book in a printed text and compare it to its name.
  • Mention the differences from the Christian Old Testament briefly, since students often see both.

Notes on this page

  • The Tanakh is counted here as 24 books (5 Torah, 8 Nevi'im, 11 Ketuvim); some count 22.
  • The Ketuvim order is not fixed in Jewish tradition; the chart follows the order in most printed editions.
  • Hebrew names are in a plain print typeface; the reviewer confirms spellings and transliteration.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the Tanakh have 24 books?

Traditional Jewish counting treats Samuel, Kings, Chronicles and Ezra-Nehemiah as one book each, and the twelve shorter prophets as one book. Some older counts give twenty-two books, and the chart carries a note about this.

Is the Ketuvim order fixed?

No. Jewish tradition does not fix one order for the Ketuvim, so the chart follows the order in most printed editions. Other manuscripts and editions arrange some of the Writings differently.

How do these books relate to the Christian Old Testament?

The same writings appear in both, but the Christian Old Testament counts 39 books and arranges them in a different order. The chart shows the Jewish count and order, and the books-of-the-Bible chart shows the Christian ones.
