About these measurement conversions handouts

A conversion chart saves students from remembering how many feet are in a mile or milliliters in a liter. These three sheets put the facts used in elementary and middle school measurement lessons in one place, grouped by what you are measuring.

The customary chart covers length, liquid volume and weight, from 12 inches in a foot to 2,000 pounds in a ton, and includes a handy line for the gallon: 4 quarts, 8 pints, 16 cups or 128 fluid ounces. The metric chart covers length, volume and mass and adds a prefix ladder that shows each step as a factor of 10.

The combined chart connects the two systems. The inch is defined as exactly 2.54 centimeters, and the foot, yard and mile follow from it, as does the pound at exactly 0.45359237 kilogram. Values for ounces, cups, quarts and gallons come from those definitions and are rounded where marked. A short temperature strip shows common Celsius and Fahrenheit points.

Every value on the charts was computed with exact fraction arithmetic from the definitions and checked against NIST publications before publishing.

How to use them

  1. Choose customary, metric or combined.
  2. Edit the title and add a student name and date.
  3. Print and keep it in a math folder or science notebook.
  4. Do one conversion together, such as 3 feet 4 inches in inches.

Classroom tips

  • Have students estimate first: about how many centimeters is a pencil?
  • Practice the prefix ladder by moving the decimal point one place for each step.
  • Use a gallon-sized container and smaller ones to show 4 quarts in a gallon.
  • Ask students to find three measurements around the room and convert each.

Where the facts come from

  • NIST: SP 1038 / Handbook 44 Appendix C: inch = 2.54 cm, foot, yard, mile, pound = 0.45359237 kg defined exactly
  • NIST: SP 811 Appendix B.8: conversion factors for inch, foot, mile, pound, ounce, gallon, quart, pint, cup, fluid ounce
  • NIST: Rounded customary-to-metric equivalents

Frequently asked questions

Are the inch and centimeter conversions exact?

Yes. Since 1959 the inch has been defined as exactly 2.54 centimeters. The foot, yard and mile conversions that follow are also exact. The chart marks them 'exact'.

Why do some values say 'about'?

Some customary units, such as the gallon, cup and fluid ounce, convert to metric as long decimals. The chart rounds them for classroom use and marks the rounded ones with the ≈ symbol.

What is the difference between ounces and fluid ounces?

Ounces measure weight, with 16 in a pound. Fluid ounces measure volume, with 8 in a cup. They are different units, so a cup of water does not weigh exactly 8 ounces.
