About these pennant bunting handouts

Pennant bunting is the cheapest party decoration in a classroom, and it also works as a quiet way to mark a reading corner, a spirit week or a unit of study. These two sheets give you the standard triangle for a string and a long school-style pennant you can write on.

The triangle page holds four large pennants, each with a fold-over tab on top. Each uses a different pattern: stripes, dots, chevrons and nested triangles, all built from simple shapes. Fold the tab over a length of string, tape it down, and the pennant hangs point down. Several pages in alternating color styles make a bright garland for a doorway or window.

The school-style page holds five long pennants, each with a narrow tab on the left side and a star near the tab. The wide, empty space to the right of the star is for a word, a name or a student's goal, written by hand. Classic pennants like these suit reading nooks, word walls and displays of student work, where each pennant can carry a different word.

Both pages have dashed cut lines and a dotted fold line for the tab. Cardstock holds the fold better than thin paper, and a dab of glue stick keeps the tab from slipping when the string is heavy.

How to use them

  1. Choose triangles for a garland or the school-style set for pennants with a message.
  2. Print on cardstock. Pick one color style for the whole garland or mix styles for a patchwork look.
  3. Cut around each outline on the dashed lines.
  4. Fold the tab along the dotted line, lay it over the string, and tape or glue it flat.
  5. Space the pennants a hand width apart and hang the string across a wall, window or doorway.

Classroom tips

  • Print pages in two color styles and alternate pennants for a garland that looks planned rather than random.
  • Write one vocabulary word on each school-style pennant and hang them along a word wall for the unit.
  • Use a hole punch on the tab if your string is thick. A paper clip tied to the string also works as a hanger.
  • Cut a few extra triangles and tuck them in a folder. Pennants tear at the string and replacements are quick to make.

Notes on this page

  • Fold the tab along the dotted line over a string, then tape.

Frequently asked questions

How wide are the triangle pennants?

Each triangle is 3.65 inches wide at the top and about 4 inches tall, plus a tab for the string. Four fit on a single letter-size page, so a garland of twelve takes three pages.

Which side of the tab folds?

Fold along the dotted line printed at the base of the tab. The tab folds back over the string, and the pennant then hangs point down. Use tape on the back to hold the fold.

Can students write on the school-style pennants?

Yes. Each has an open area beside the star for writing a word, name or goal. Students can write with markers or colored pencils, and the pennants stay flat enough to display on a wall.
