About these valentine's day printables handouts

February is a good month to talk about books people love. This set puts hearts to work in six forms: a reading log for a love-of-reading challenge, a certificate, a calendar page, a sheet of bookmarks, a border page and a reward chart. The hearts are drawn from two simple curves, with a solid version and an outlined version that alternate.

Bookmarks are the easiest way to use the set. Print a page for each table, let students trade them as book-themed valentines, and send the rest home. The phrases on them are about reading, not romance, so they suit every grade. The border page makes a neat frame for a thank-you letter or a poem for a classmate.

The set has six files with one design: a reading log, a certificate, a blank calendar page, a page of ten bookmarks, a border page with writing lines, and a reward chart with 30 spots. Type your own names and dates into the fill-in boxes before you print. The reading logs, certificates, bookmark sheets and reward charts carry no logo or web address, because they go home with students; the calendar and border page keep a small footer.

How to use them

  1. Pick the file you need from the version picker: reading log, certificate, calendar, bookmarks, border page or reward chart.
  2. Open the fill-in boxes and type the title, names, teacher and dates. What you type is what prints.
  3. Choose a class style. The bright styles are cheerful on screen, and black and white saves ink.
  4. Print on letter paper. Use cardstock for the bookmarks and reward chart so they last.
  5. Cut the bookmarks apart along the dashed lines, and punch the small circle if you want to add yarn.

Classroom tips

  • Run a book-love week: students write one line about a favorite book on the border page and read it aloud.
  • Print bookmarks in one color on light paper and let students decorate the outlined hearts before they trade them.
  • Use the reward chart for kind acts or reading minutes in the weeks before February 14, then send it home.

Notes on this page

  • Calendar pages have no printed dates: type the month and year, then write the dates in by hand.

Frequently asked questions

Are these only for February 14?

No. The pages work for the whole month, and the bookmark phrases are about loving to read, so they stay useful in a library display or a book swap at any point in the month.

Can students write their own valentine messages on the border page?

Yes. The inside of the border page is open writing space with a title box and name line, which suits a short note or poem to a classmate.

Do the student pages carry the site logo?

No. The reading log, certificate, bookmarks and reward chart print with no logo or web address, so they are clean for a student to keep. The calendar and border page keep a small footer.
