About these clocks and time handouts

Telling time asks students to read two hands, two scales and two number systems at once. The analog clock chart takes that apart. It shows a large clock with the hours inside and the minutes, counted by fives, around the outside, so students see that the 4 on the face means 20 minutes.

The chart also shows the same hour four ways: 3:00, 3:15, 3:30 and 3:45, with the names o'clock, quarter past, half past and quarter to. The hands on every clock are drawn from the real angle for the time, so the hour hand sits a little past the number as the minutes pass.

The blank faces sheet has twelve numbered faces with no hands, each with a line for the time. Use it for drawing hands, writing the time or both. The elapsed time chart gives a worked example, with hops of 2 hours and 25 minutes, then five boxes with a number line for students to solve their own.

The 24-hour chart lists every hour in a.m. and p.m. beside its 24-hour form, such as 3:00 p.m. = 15:00, and ends with the basic time facts: 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour and 24 hours in a day.

How to use them

  1. Choose the page for your lesson.
  2. Edit the title and add a student name and date.
  3. Print the analog chart for the wall, or the blank faces for practice.
  4. For elapsed time, model one problem with hops before students try their own.

Classroom tips

  • Cover the minute labels outside the clock once students know them by heart.
  • Have students set a clock to the time you call out and show a partner.
  • For elapsed time, jump to the next hour first, then add the remaining minutes.
  • Use the 24-hour chart to read a bus or train schedule.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the hour hand not exactly on the number?

The hour hand moves a little every minute. At 3:30 it is halfway between 3 and 4. The chart draws each hand at its true angle, which is 0.5 degrees per minute for the hour hand.

How do I find elapsed time?

Start at the first time, hop to the next hour, add whole hours, then add leftover minutes. From 3:15 to 5:40, hop 2 hours to 5:15, then 25 minutes to 5:40, for 2 hours 25 minutes.

How do I convert p.m. to 24-hour time?

For 1:00 p.m. through 11:59 p.m., add 12 to the hour. So 3:00 p.m. is 15:00. Noon stays 12:00, and midnight is 00:00.
